The student community, being young and energetic, are a bundle of inflammable material, which at the touch of a spark ignites into a large uncontrollable fire like forest fire. They, being young have no patience, are lively and malleable.
In India, the trend of students actively participating in politics began in the early 20th century, when India was fighting for its freedom. The elders being busy with their bread earning, they actively encouraged the youngsters to enter the arena of politics. Besides, they were young and would be easily enthused to join the mass movement at the drop of a hat. Political parties at that time started enlisting the support of the young students who organized themselves happily, to help one party or the other. This trend started in the early years of 20th century and continued and even expanded up to date.
However, once independence was won, it was to be reconsidered if students should be allowed or couraged to enter politics. Some sections of society now started believing that students should stay away from politics and keep to their study schedules only. While the society kept debating on this issue, the politician took the younger generation as their work cum energy tanks and this participation of students in politics has come to stay.
The present scenario in India is thus a keen struggle of political parties engaged in enlisting support of students. This obviously results in the students getting sharply divided as if they were of this political party or that so much so, even the campus elections become tainted with a touch of politics.
There is of course nothing without advantages and disadvantages, so does this involvement of students in politics. There are both serious disadvantages and may be few advantages too of students being on the centrestage of politics. Disadvantages outnumber the advantages. Firstly, while the students, have primarily entered college for studies they get distracted from their prime objective and become entangled in the dirty game of politics. The energy and time they use or waster in masterminding political moves, could well be used to study. This entry of politics in the premises of educational institutions has caused many a damage to several students. Students have got rusticated owing to their active participation in politics, thus losing their hold on studies. Politics teaches students to put an end to all rules and regulations and become rowdy and violent. This leads to closure of institutions which again take a toll of students’ study time. The very innocent and loving appearance of children gets lost and they become rude, arrogant and disobedient. When there is too much of hooliganism entering into educational institutions, even police is to be called sometimes and there is utter disorder in the campus and even bullets find their way among the students. The disadvantages of students entering politics are numerous and destructive.
When we study the advantages of this system, they do exist but, are very few and hardly significant. Children entering the arena of politics learn the art of public speaking. They learn to be assertive and impressive. This medium is a good stepping stone to the art of leadership. The important and real advantage is that students in these prime years of life gain a lot of knowledge of politics which gives them training to enter the arena as trained politicians.
After studying the pros and cons of students’ participation in politics, the disadvantages are more damaging than the gains acquired in the sequence. For, all the advantages students gain, can as well be achieved so in other ways also and there is no need for their entry into politics.
Students must stay away from politics and retain their interest in studies which alone can help them steer the ships of their lives.

Scene at an Election Booth
Election is a common feature in the continued governance of any state and any country. This is a moot point specially in democratic countries – where people elect their own government. For in a democracy, the government is supposed to be “of the people, for the people and by the people”. So much so good. Everywhere we can guess that elections could be more or less on similar patterns. The country is divided into smaller units of constituencies and each constituency has scores or hundreds of booths.
An election booth is the place which is specified and notified by the government for people to come and cast their votes. The booth is manned by officers of the working government to see that all goes well. The workers of each political parties involved in the elections are also stationed at the both. There duty is to see the there is no cheating taking place at the elections both.
An election booth in India appears to be a site of mixed feelings and mixed occurrences. It is more of a miniature battlefield all set with guntoting police and army on the prowl. At the booth, the officers stationed appear to be like mice in a lion’s den. No one knows when there may be a poaching crowd come to capture the booth, when there will be rigging at the booth and when there may be a firing spree to cap it all.
The serpentine queues at booths go to indicate quite a lot about the people. All types of people, old and young, men and women, interested and disinterested, pour in at the booth. Some seem to have come with first and one time curiosity to see what it is like at the booth, some coming with a vengeance to rout the reigning government, while a lot others coming just because others are coming.
In India the election booths provide a colourful scenario, in keeping with the variety that exists in the country itself.
At the polling booth, behind the closed door where the boxes are kept is a scene of utter disgust and shabby lethargic performance. It appears that on the one hand officers inside are too lethargic to be true to their task, while on the other hand one can smell the air of fear within the four walls of the room. Officers on duty appear to be on tenterhooks, for they do not know when there will be an emergence of non sence. They do not know when a person who comes in to cast his/her vote may try to exploit the situation and create hullabaloo.
Elections are conducted in every country and electorate and election booths also must be existing everywhere, but the scene at an election booth in India is unmatched. Outside, the booth there appears to be an area as if earmarked to become a battle arena, and inside the booth, it is both the calm of eternity and silence of a graveyard.
When the booth gives this appearance, there could be little to expect from the results. The results coming out of so much gloom and danger cannot be indicative of anything other than gloom or danger.

Freedom - An India Style
It is high time for us to realize what we understand by the word Freedom. It appears that what we understand is that, doing what we want, when we want, and how we want is freedom. The one point to understand is that, such freedom can only exist in the jungle, as, freedom in a civilization has a different interpretation. No civilized man can be free in this manner, as this style of freedom is apt to destroy the civilization, as we see in the example of India today. Once we claim to be civilized, we can never aspire to be free in this way. Thus, freedom Indian style and civilization can never go hand in hand, as, the more civilized a community, the less free is the individual. It is this misinterpretation of freedom that is leading India to a state of complete chaos in every sphere of its existence, be it political, social, education or personal, or any other sphere. This is because, each Indian is doing what he wants with no inhibitions or restrictions of rules and regulations of discipline which tie a community into one entity.
I daresay that, our type of freedom can never lead to a compact disciplined and happy society for always, each one of us has to have a different desire to do different things, thus there is bound to be absolute lack of cohesion, and clashes with what others want, have to invariably occur everywhere, so much so that, confusion has become the order of the day. Instead of harmony and unity there are constant bickerings among all and everywhere in India and the culprit of creating this situation is the so called and gifted “freedom”.
We have got all the freedom but, no one, yes, no one, has ever cared to teach the uneducated Indian how to make use of this gift, and neither has anyone been taught the fact that each freedom comes with its corresponding duty, the other side of the coin of freedom. The average Indian even the so called educated, have not ever cared to fulfil their responsibilities corresponding to the freedom they continue to enjoy. None of us has ever cared to learn the duties that go hand in hand with the rights we enjoy, and the result is, today’s India, where every place is rampant with confusion, indiscipline whether it be the home, the school, the office or the road. This is the result of our wrong interpretation of independence on the one side and an incomplete education regarding the use of freedom.
We must remember that every right has its corresponding duty, at least now, after 50 years we must learn our duties as well as we have assimilated the lesson of our rights. The tragedy has been that, in India we have put the cart before the horse, and given or taught people their rights without explaining to them their duties as well. At least now, at this juncture, to save India from complete destruction, we must set our cart in order, and learn more about our duties and the rights will then fall in their right and appropriate places.

Role of Scientist
The phenomenal progress of Science has brought about a revolution of development and prosperity in the modern age. Mankind is today living an entirely different life to what our forefathers used to live. The outlook of humanity has changed. Science has proved to be a great achievement for humanity and it has come to relieve mankind from all sufferings, pains, poverty and diseases. It is serving humanity in all walks of life. However, Science has also done great disservice to mankind in the field of armaments and destructive effects of war.
Science has helped man to increase production in various ways. Science has helped in growing textile and paper industries, sugar and fertilizer industries. Countries which are industrially advanced are most powerful and rich today. Rapid industrialization of a country is the slogan of humanity. Without Science, we cannot grow enough for feeding the increasing population. Extensive and intensive agriculture has been made possible by Science as a boon to the entire humanity. New agricultural machines and disease resistant varieties of seeds are some of the contributions to agricultural sector. The deserts of yesterday have been converted into major granaries of the world today by Science.
For humanity, time and distance have no sense today. Science has made man to cancer distances within seconds and minutes. The world has got narrowed down to a global. Highly advanced industrial economy has replaced the self-sufficient village economy thus making a change in every walk of life. If the scientists provide the technical know – how to underdeveloped countries of the world in respect of development in various fields, then definitely it will be a great service to entire man kind.
Science has made human beings reach other planets and conduct research work there. Various satellites made by man are moving around the earth. Man has landed on the moon. Science has given humanity very effective means of propaganda. Powerful means of communication like television, radio, the cinema and internet have made the entire world aware of latest technology – information and news. It is possible to create public opinion at the same time through video – conferencing. Man has begun to use his knowledge of Science for peaceful purposes. It is wished that science will enable man to remove horros of war completely from the mind of humanity.
In spite of all contributions of Science towards welfare of mankind, there are various disadvantages of Science. In many industries, human labour has been replaced by advanced machines, thereby leading to unemployment. Often there are instances of leakage of poisonous gases from factories either due to technical snag or human error. But it is mankind that is affected. Science has given atom bombs which make the entire mankind live in a constant fear of destruction and misery. Limitation of Science does not teach when to use the atom for curing purposes or when to kill with it. Threat of universal destruction always hangs over human being.
Another losing aspect of humanity due to Science is its spirit. Science has made man to forget the spirit. It is the root cause of all evils. With its breath – taking discoveries and inventions day – by –day, and with a promise of nothing for the spirit, man no longer cares for the development and upliftment of his spirit. Man has lost faith in religion. Religion is decaying along with sad plight of our art and culture. Science has made the man of modern humanity a moral dwarf. Science has no power to uplift man and inspire him with noble ideas. Truly Science has given power but not wisdom.
Scientists all over the world should be encouraged to carry on such research programmes through which they can promote welfare and prosperity of mankind and save it from complete extinction due to adverse impact of nuclear energy etc. Modern scientists should take it as their responsibility to divert the use of nuclear energy into channels which would make this world a safer place and better life for human being to live.

Atomic Power and Its Impact
It was America which tested the atom bomb in the deserts of Mexico, but Otto Habur, a German scientist was the first to succeed in making the atom bomb by splitting the atom. For this he got the Nobel Prize for 1944 – 45. Later on, America dropped two atom bombs on Japan to bring the World War II to an end. The first was dropped on Hiroshima and the second on Nagasaki on 6th and 9th August 1945, respectively. Both the cities were ruined. America came out as the mightiest country of the world.
Now the atom bomb is the thing of the past. Hydrogen bomb which is made by fusion of hydrogen atom into helium is many times more powerful than the atom bomb. And in this series most destructive (powerful) is the neutron bomb.
Today, the world is sitting on a volcano. The fear of use of the bomb in war has started a mad race among all the nations, especially those who are rich, can invest huge amount on nuclear weapons. Dr. Einstein, the world famous scientist once said that the fourth war, at all it breaks out, will be fought with bricks and stones, because a third world war will bring everything in the world to ashes. Therefore, it is a challenge to mankind. Either man should put an end to war or war will end him.
The association of atomic power with destruction has all along raised the question whether atomic energy should be developed at all. After the incidents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, man has begun looking on atomic power with horror and suspicion.
His horror is certainly well founded. The superpowers like America, Russia, Germany, France, China etc. have stockpiled deadly atomic weapons in their arsenals. There is tension and suspicion, distrust and fear of each other. If a war starts between the nuclear powers, atomic or nuclear weapons may certainly be used and then mankind will witness a destruction of all the fruits of civilization and culture, all beautiful things which science has given for our comforts, well being, pleasures will be wiped out of existence. Instead of bustling of life there will be deadly silence of death. All those who love life, its beauty and goodness would like the atomic power to be brought to an end.
India has always opposed the use of atomic energy for the destruction of mankind. Though on May 18, 1974 history was made at Pokhran by exploding the first nuclear device. Then after a gap of 25 years, on May 11 and 13, 1999, India again tested successfully its nuclear power. This has led Pakistan also to test its nuclear power. It also successfully launched in May itself, though both are committed to the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes only.
Atomic power harnessed for peaceful purposes can bring enormous benefits to humanity. It can solve the energy problem. Nuclear power can be used for canal excavation, natural gas stimulation, underground mining, oil and extinguishing gas fires. Agricultural production can be increased manifold by making use of radioisotopes. Industrial production will go up. There will be no pollution due to smoke and fumes coming out of chimneys. A revolution can be brought about in the medical science. We know that radium rays are used for treating cancer and other diseases. Atomic energy can be used in place of conventional sources of energy in transport. This will make transport quicker cheaper and more comfortable.

Science in Daily Life
In the history of mankind, advent of Science is the greatest blessing. Science has come to relieve mankind from sufferings, ignorance and to control nature. It has been defined as a systematized body of wisdom and knowledge which can give rise to greater and greater inventions. Science has also been known as a faithful servant of man who serves all his life and as per the orders of man. Science can be harmful if we misure it.
Science has brought about far-reaching changes in every sphere of our daily life. Now everybody can afford to avail the benefits of luxuries and comforts created by Science. Science has made goods cheap and readily available and has brought them within reach of every individual. All kinds of gadgets of music, entertainment and communication have been brought to our door with the help of Science. Surely, the life of man is very different from what it used to be few years back. Truly, Science has given ears to the deaf, eyes to the blind and limbs to the crippled.
In everyday live, we have to communicate with different friends and relatives, various official people and for general purposes. And many people to be contacted can be at very far off distances. However, time and distance both have been conquered by Science. Whether we want to communicate or travel, both are possible within seconds. For communication, we have telephones, mobiles, wireless, E-mail, VSATs and internet etc., For faster traveling, aeroplanes are being used. Railways have made journeys swift, safe and comfortable. Entire world has shrunk into a small family. Modern ships have conquered turbulent waters and are perfectly safe for traveling and transportation of goods.
Health is wealth. This has been made possible with modern machines. Science has invented ways to peep inside the human body to tackle diseases of human beings through X-ray machines. Diseases can easily be detected and various tests conducted within a matter of few seconds. Complicated operations are possible and are successful with the help of equipments and machines invented with the help of Science. Human life would get transformed into new horizons and heights of prosperity when atomic energy is fully utilized for peaceful purposes.
A big contribution of science in our daily life is electricity. Without electricity, there would have been complete darkness after evening hours and no industry could function without the power of electricity. We have been able to control the effects of weather change with electrical energy. All fans, coolers and air-conditioners in summer and all kinds of heating gadgets in winter, functions with the help of electricity. Entertainment through cinema is one of the most remarkable invention of science in our daily life. It provides us cheap and enjoyable pastime and comfort from tensions of daily life. Now each household has television and radios which are the fastest medium of mass communication made possible by Science.
Science is proving to be of great help in our daily life. The world would have come to a standstill without inventions of Science. There is shortage of space everywhere and as such, high – rise buildings are constructed both for commercial and residential purposes. Inventions of lifts working in these buildings have made life very easy. A housewife can cook tast with the help of electricity run kitchen machines. Thus she saves a lot of her cooking time and is able to devote that precious time in many other activities related to family life. The washing of clothes for her has become really an enjoyable game of few minutes. Even she need not run here and there spreading wet clothes for drying. All this is possible with the production of fully automatic washing machines.
In spite of Science as a blessing in our daily life, we remain in constant fear of mass destruction weapons invented by Science. Another disadvantage of science has been the misuse of mass media for propaganda. Sometimes information stories facts are blown out of proportion leading to tension among the masses. Much of communal tension withing the country has been the creation of media. Mass media is used by anti-social elements to spread rumours and false information. Once a story is circulated, it spreads like a forest fire, thanks to mass media. It is certainly upto mankind to utilize the benefits of Science for welfare of all or to indulge in making mass destruction weapons for miseries of future generations. Science can further be utilized to make our daily life more prosperous, comfortable and full of happiness.

Air Transport a Marvelous Gift of Science
Science is a great blessing to mankind. It has transformed our life to a great extent from what it used to be few years back. The triumph of science is seen everywhere. Science has changed the face of the earth, the world has changed more during the past 100 years than during 4000 years before. In fact, we have ceased to look upon trains or motor cars, electric fans or telegraph or radio as marvels of Science. Today, we see the greatest and marvelous gift of Science that is, ‘fly like a bird’ in the open sky. Since long, man was satisfied with buses, trains or even ships. He wanted to fly in the sky like birds. He craved for wings. This desire of man let to the invention of the aeroplane by the Wright brothers in 1903.
Aeroplanes are the gift of Science as mode of air transportation. Science has made traveling a pleasure particularly air travel. Through air travel, Science has spanned the sky, measured the oceans and wrested from nature many of her hidden treasure. It has annihilated time and distance and made the contact with world easier and quicker. Early man used to go from one place to another on foot and then gradually he used animals as beasts of burden. Thus, road transport progressed and then railways and water transport was invented. However, human being was not satisfied with all this. He invented aeroplanes. With air travel, The whole world is well-connected by a network of different airways.
In today’s world, man has become very tast going and is always occupied with many tasks at one time. He wants to save time in every respect, particularly, when he is to travel from one place to the other place. He doesn’t want to waste a single moment in transit. Under such circumstances, it is air transport only which has helped him in a big way.
Air – travel is found to be most comfortable. There are no hindrances and traffic jams as is mostly there in road transport or problems associated with railways. In India, Tata Sons and National Airways began air operations in 1932 with light and single engined aircraft for the purposes of mail transportation. It was only after World War II that full-fledged advanced type of aircraft started operating in India. They connected all important destinations. Then, in 1953, civil air transport was nationalized in India due to financial constraints being faced by the sector. Since then, tremendous progress has been made. Today, there are various domestic and international airlines carrying passengers to different parts in India and to the various parts of the world.
Though air travel is considered as one of the best contributions of Science yet it has got various limitations. Firstly, it is very costly and only the rich people can avail the facility of air transportation. A common man can travel in the train only. Secondly, air travel can be risky and dangerous. This is because if there is any mishap or accident, there is no chance of survival. Accidents prove to be very fatal and loss of life and property in a huge manner. Also the air travel becomes dangerous whenever the weather condition are adverse.
There has been a constant desire of a man to develop more advanced and sophisticated aeroplanes. He has not been deterred by the hazards of accidents in traveling by aeroplanes. Man has seen the importance of aeroplanes in war times. Today, the United States of America has the most sophisticated fighter planes which can destroy enemy camps within seconds and at any time of the day or night. Today wars are won with the strength of air power.
This wonderful invention of Science in recent years has progressed by leaps and bounds. The emphasis is on more speed, safety, passenger – comfort and convenience. There is more and more competition among various airlines to offer the most competitive rates and most convenient timings. The future of air-travel is bound to get brighter in the times ahead. The efforts are being made to make the air transportation more safe and economical through new researches.
